Neptune Furniture is renowned for its enduring beauty and functionality. But have you ever wondered where this signature style originated? We will delve into Neptune’s rich design heritage, exploring the influences that have shaped the brand’s aesthetic and solidified its position as a leader in timeless design.
Rooted in Tradition:
The story begins with John Sims-Hilditch and Emma Sims-Hilditch, the co-founders of Neptune. When furnishing their first home, they were drawn to the timeless elegance of antique freestanding pieces, particularly those inspired by Georgian design. These pieces, with their balanced proportions, decorative mouldings, and generous use of open shelving, sparked the vision for Neptune’s first kitchen collection: Chichester.
Beyond Inspiration, A Modern Approach:
While Georgian design provided the foundation, Neptune didn’t simply replicate the past. The co-founders understood the need for functionality in contemporary living spaces. Recognizing this, they ensured that the Chichester collection, while maintaining its classic charm, featured modern elements like integrated appliances and clever storage solutions exactly like this new season’s pieces.
The Farlow collection is is helpfully flexible as our lives and needs evolve. The three designs mean the storage systems can be used in a multitude of ways, from low (the sideboard), to medium (the cabinet), to high (the dresser, which combines the sideboard and the cabinet). ‘The Farlow is a modern version of the traditional dresser in some ways thanks to its versatility,’ says John Sims-Hilditch, co-founder of Neptune, ‘with the addition of beautifully curved edges that look to twentieth century design, ultimately creating a timeless piece of furniture.’
A Tapestry of Influences:
Neptune’s design journey doesn’t end with Georgian inspiration. Over the years, the brand has embraced other design movements that resonate with its core values of quality and craftsmanship.
Shaker Simplicity: The Suffolk kitchen cabinetry exemplifies the influence of the Shaker style. Its clean lines, focus on functionality, and use of solid wood resonate with Neptune’s commitment to creating furniture that endures.
Arts & Crafts Movement: The Wycombe rush-seating collection pays homage to the Arts & Crafts movement’s emphasis on natural materials and expert craftsmanship. The intricate woven rush detailing alongside the solid oak frame adds a touch of artisanal charm to any home.
A Commitment to Quality:
Neptune’s dedication to quality materials and traditional joinery techniques shines through in every piece of furniture they create. Whether it’s the use of smooth tulipwood for painted furniture or strong, grained oak for exposed areas, Neptune prioritises both beauty and durability.
A Legacy that Lives On:
As Neptune continues to evolve, its commitment to its design heritage remains unwavering. By drawing inspiration from the past while adapting it for modern living, Neptune crafts furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and built to last. ‘When something is made with love and talent, it can be powerful,’ observes John. ‘It’s why we care so much about what we make. We design and craft with love and experience and hopefully, that will have a subtle but meaningful impact on whoever enjoys our pieces in their own home.
